Drug Introduction

Telmisartan is an oral Antihypertensive drug. It is under the class of Angio-tension Receptor Blockers.

Uses / Indications:

Telmisartan mainly is used to treat high blood pressure. It is also used to treat heart failure and diabetic kidney disease. This drug is a reasonable initial treatment for high blood pressure. This drug is recommended to be used with a proper diet and exercise regularly, possibly with other medications.

How it works:

This drug works by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily hence helping in lowering the blood pressure

Medicine interaction:

Telmisartan increases blood potassium levels due to its mechanism of action. This in combination with potassium preparations or potassium-sparing diuretics could cause hyperkalaemia. In combination with NSAIDs can cause kidney damage, especially in patients with impaired kidney function. Drug interactions may cause a change in the manner in which the drug affects the body, this may lead to an increased risk for serious side effects. Do not change, start or stop the usage and dosage of any medicines without consulting your doctor.
